Frequently Asked Questions
There is no Uber in Robertson. How do we get around?
Correct, and it is the one thing to sort out before you arrive. There is no Uber or Bolt in the valley and no public transport, so you cannot rely on hailing a lift.
- Drive yourself. Simplest. Hire a car at Cape Town airport. Everything in the valley is a short drive on good roads.
- Book a private shuttle or driver. For getting here, and for a day of tastings when nobody wants to drive. Tell us your dates and we will help you arrange it.
- Ask us for a pick-up. We can arrange collection from Cape Town airport.
If you are planning a full day of tasting, book the driver at the same time as the room. Local drivers are busy in season and over festival weekends.
How far is it, and how do we find you?
We are in the countryside at Klaas Voogds West, just off the R60 between Robertson and Ashton, with vineyards and mountain views around us. It is about 160 km from Cape Town and under two hours' drive.
We will send directions with your booking confirmation. Download the map before you leave Cape Town.
Can we taste wine on the property?
There is no cellar here and we do not make our own wine. What we do have is a restaurant with wine from the valley, and 36 wine farms within a short drive.
Tell us what you like to drink and we will point you at the ones worth your morning.
What is there to do without leaving the property?
Enough that guests book three nights instead of one.
- The pool
- A jacuzzi, including private ones in some rooms
- Walks in the countryside around us
- The rustic wellness cabin
- Breakfast, lunch and dinner in our own restaurant, so you never have to get in the car
Which wine farms should we visit, and what else is nearby?
You are in the Robertson Wine Valley, which has 36 wineries on what is claimed to be the world's longest wine route, along Route 62. Five towns make it up: Robertson, Ashton, Bonnievale, McGregor and Montagu.
Guest favourites near us include Van Loveren, Viljoensdrift, where you can eat on a barge on the Breede River, and Kranskop up the road.
Beyond the wine there is river cruising and canoeing on the Breede, hiking, mountain biking, horse riding, golf, and the drive over to McGregor or Montagu for the day.
Can we have lunch and dinner here?
Yes. Our restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, with a short menu that changes with the season and what is available locally, plus wine from the valley.
Book your table when you book your room, especially at weekends and over festival weekends. We are not in town, so the nearest alternatives are a drive away.
What can we book at the wellness cabin?
The rustic wellness cabin is on the property and everything is by appointment. Book when you book your room, or at least a day ahead. There is one cabin, so the good times go early.
What is the Walk, Wine and Wellness stay?
Three days and four nights, planned and booked for you. It runs from January to November, arriving on a Monday or Tuesday and leaving on the Thursday or Friday, and we need between 6 and 30 guests to run it.
It includes your room and all your meals, wine tastings, visits to an olive farm and a lavender farm, a picnic basket, a river cruise on the Breede, a tour of the valley, and a 30 minute massage each day.
Bring comfortable walking shoes, a small backpack, a hat and sunscreen, a rain jacket and a water bottle.
Can we bring our dog?
Yes, theLAB Robertson is pet friendly. Tell us when you book so we can put you in the right room.
When is the best time to come?
Any time, but it depends what you want.
The valley has four big wine weekends: Hands-on Harvest in February, Wacky Wine Weekend in June, the Robertson Slow Festival in the first week of August, and Wine on the River in October. The whole valley fills up, so book months ahead for those, and book your driver at the same time.
Outside those the valley is quiet. Summer is hot and dry and made for the pool. Winter days are usually clear and cool, and the nights are cold.
Can we hold a meeting or an event here?
Yes. We have a meeting room, our own kitchen, and a quiet setting under two hours from Cape Town, which makes it an easy place to take a team for a couple of days.
Send us your dates, your numbers, and what you need the room for, and we will send you one price for everything.
